Pick Up in Nairobi, Drop Off in Mombasa

Traditional car hire punishes exactly the route Kenyans drive most. One-way rentals from Nairobi to Mombasa carry fees of KES 10,000–30,000 — if the company allows them at all. A FlexMove subscription includes multi-city drop-off across 14 cities, with no one-way fee and no return trip.

The one-way rental problem — and why it exists

There is nothing quite like a road trip in Kenya. The landscape shifts from Nairobi's highland haze to the coastal plains and the Indian Ocean. But traditional car hire turns that anticipation into a negotiation — because the moment you say "one way," the price changes.

Pick up in Nairobi, drop off in Mombasa. Almost every rental company in Kenya either charges a one-way fee, or refuses the trip entirely. The fee commonly lands between KES 10,000 and KES 30,000, because the operator has to get the car back to its origin — usually empty, on their own fuel, on their own driver time.

The economics make sense from the rental company's side. It just does not make sense from the traveller's. You are paying a "return trip" penalty for a trip you do not need returned.

The structural difference

Traditional rental fleets belong to a single depot. Move the car, and you break the fleet. FlexMove fleets belong to a network across 14 cities. Move the car, and the network absorbs it — often because another subscriber is about to drive it back.

How multi-city mobility works — in four steps

Once you are subscribed to FlexMove, the network is yours. You pick up a vehicle in any of the 14 cities and drop it off in any other. No one-way fee. No penalty. No return trip.

Choose your pickup city

Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, or any of the 14 cities. Reserve from your dashboard.

Drive to your destination

Use the vehicle as normal — commute, road trip, business travel, relocation.

Drop off in a different city

Return the vehicle at the FlexMove location in your destination city. No need to drive back.

No extra fees

The multi-city drop-off is included in your monthly subscription. You do not pay a one-way charge.

The 14-city network

FlexMove operates across Kenya's major economic corridors. The cities below are interconnected — any drop-off point can serve as a pickup point for the next subscriber.

The FlexMove network
14 cities. Any pickup. Any drop-off. One subscription.
Nairobi
Kiambu
Mombasa
Malindi
Eldoret
Bungoma
Kakamega
Kericho
Nakuru
Kitale
Migori
Busia
Kisumu
Kisii
Every city in the network is a valid pickup or drop-off point. That means a Nairobi → Mombasa trip can end in Mombasa — and the same vehicle can start a Mombasa → Nairobi trip for another subscriber the following week. The network balances itself.

One-way fees vs. FlexMove — the numbers

Put the two options side by side on the country's most-driven long-distance route — Nairobi to Mombasa, roughly 485 km.

Traditional car hire
Nairobi → Mombasa, one way
KES 10K–30K

One-way fee alone, on top of the daily rate. Some operators refuse the trip entirely. The fee exists because the car must return to Nairobi — empty.

FlexMove subscription
Nairobi → Mombasa, one way
KES 0

Multi-city drop-off is included in your monthly subscription. The fleet network absorbs the vehicle's relocation — often another subscriber drives it back.

For a single trip, that is up to KES 30,000 saved. For a subscriber who travels the corridor two or three times a year, the multi-city feature alone can pay for a full month of subscription.

A rental car is bound to a depot. A subscription is bound to a network. Only one of them lets you leave the car where the trip ended.

Four use cases where multi-city mobility matters

Multi-city drop-off is not a novelty feature. It changes how four specific kinds of trips are planned.

Road trips

Nairobi → Kisumu to visit family, then continue to Mombasa for the coast. Drop off in Mombasa. No return trip, no backtracking, no wasted days on the road.

Business travel

Visit clients in Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kisumu across one trip. Pick up in Nairobi, drop off in Kisumu at the end. No dead time returning the vehicle to origin.

Relocation

Moving from Nairobi to Mombasa? Load your belongings, drive down, drop off the vehicle when you arrive. No separate removal van, no return trip, no one-way penalty.

One-way journeys

Attending a wedding in Nakuru and flying back to Nairobi? Drive down, drop off in Nakuru, fly home. No return leg, no stranded vehicle to arrange.

How to plan a multi-city trip

Planning the trip takes a few minutes. Five practical tips from the fleet desk:

  • Plan your route. Decide which cities you want to visit, and confirm the final destination is in the FlexMove network.
  • Check your kilometres. The Car Plan includes 1,000 km/month. A Nairobi–Mombasa–Nairobi round trip is roughly 970 km, so a one-way Nairobi–Mombasa trip (485 km) sits comfortably inside the allowance. Multi-city trips spanning several cities may need a plan upgrade — our desk will scope it with you.
  • Reserve your vehicle. Log into your dashboard, select your pickup city, and reserve. You can reserve up to 2 hours in advance.
  • Drive and enjoy. The vehicle is yours for the trip. Fuel as you go, at any station you choose.
  • Drop off at your destination. Return the vehicle to the FlexMove location in your final city. That is the end of your responsibility.

What about fuel?

Fuel is not included in the subscription. You fill the tank as you go, at whatever station you choose. For a Nairobi → Mombasa trip, that is roughly 40 litres each way — about KES 8,500 at 2026 Nairobi pump prices — plus whatever you burn while you are in the destination city.

That is a real cost, and we will not pretend otherwise. But compare it to the alternative: a traditional one-way rental carries the same fuel cost plus a KES 10,000–30,000 one-way fee plus a daily rental rate. Even with fuel on you, the subscription economics on a long-distance trip are not close. See the fuel cost anatomy for the full picture.

Operator's note — from the FlexMove fleet desk

The most common misunderstanding about multi-city mobility is that we lose money on it. We do not. The network self-balances. A subscriber drives Nairobi → Mombasa; a week later another subscriber drives Mombasa → Nairobi. Our job is to keep enough inventory at the ends of the corridor to serve both directions.

Traditional car hire cannot do this because the fleet belongs to a single depot. Ours belongs to a network. That is the entire difference — and it is why we can offer what they charge KES 30,000 for.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pick up a car in Nairobi and drop it off in Mombasa?

Yes. FlexMove subscriptions include multi-city drop-off across all 14 cities in the network. You pick up a vehicle in Nairobi, drive to Mombasa, and drop it off at the FlexMove location there. There is no one-way fee and no penalty for returning the vehicle to a different city than where you collected it.

How much do traditional car hire companies charge for one-way rentals in Kenya?

One-way fees in Kenya typically range from KES 10,000 to KES 30,000, depending on distance and the rental company. Some companies refuse one-way rentals entirely. On the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor, the fee commonly sits around KES 15,000–25,000.

What are the 14 cities FlexMove operates in?

FlexMove operates in Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Malindi, Eldoret, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kericho, Nakuru, Kitale, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, and Kisii — 14 cities covering the major economic corridors of Kenya.

Does the FlexMove subscription include fuel?

No. Fuel is not included in the subscription — you fill the tank as you go. This keeps the subscription fee predictable and lets you choose where and when to refuel. On long-distance trips, fuel is still far cheaper than the one-way fees traditional rental companies charge.

What happens if I exceed my monthly kilometres on a long trip?

The Car Plan includes 1,000 km per month. For extended road trips, additional kilometres are billed at a transparent per-km rate, or you can upgrade to a higher-mileage plan for the month. Our fleet desk will help you scope the right plan before you leave.

Can I use a FlexMove subscription for relocation between cities?

Yes. Relocation is one of the strongest use cases for multi-city mobility. You drive your belongings to the new city and drop the vehicle off at the FlexMove location there. No return trip, no one-way fee, no need to hire a separate moving vehicle.

Your trip ends where it ends

No return trip. No one-way fee. 14 cities, one subscription, one predictable monthly fee.
