What one-way car hire actually is
One-way car hire means exactly what it sounds like: you collect a vehicle in one city and you return it in another. Nairobi pickup, Mombasa drop-off. Kisumu pickup, Eldoret drop-off. The vehicle does not come back to where it started — and you do not have to drive it back.
That sounds simple. In Kenya, it is not. Traditional rental companies price one-way hires either as a refused service or as a premium add-on, because the fleet is anchored to a specific depot. A car picked up in Nairobi and dropped in Mombasa is a car that now has to be returned — empty, on the operator's fuel, on the operator's driver time. The fee the rental company charges you is the price of that return.
Across Kenya in 2026, one-way fees run from KES 10,000 to KES 30,000. On the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor, the fee typically sits at KES 15,000–25,000. On top of the daily rental rate. On top of fuel. On top of the insurance the rental company usually charges as an extra. And some operators simply say no.
A traditional rental fleet belongs to one depot. Move the car, and you break the fleet — somebody has to drive it back. A FlexMove fleet belongs to a network of 14 cities. Move the car, and the network absorbs it — often because the next subscriber is driving it back in the other direction.
How one-way drop-off works on FlexMove
The mechanics are simple. FlexMove operates in 14 Kenyan cities — Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Malindi, Eldoret, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kericho, Nakuru, Kitale, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, and Kisii. Any city can be a pickup point and any city can be a drop-off point. There is no one-way fee, and there is no return trip required.
If you are not a subscriber, choose a plan — Car Plan for cars, Bike Plan for bikes.
Browse the fleet near you and reserve a vehicle from your dashboard. Up to 2 hours in advance.
Drive anywhere in Kenya. There are no route restrictions on a FlexMove vehicle.
Return the vehicle at your destination. No return trip, no one-way fee, no penalty.
Once you have done the drop-off, your subscription continues — normally for the remainder of the month. If you are done with the vehicle entirely, you cancel with seven days' notice. If you want another vehicle in your new city, you reserve one from the fleet there. Nothing about the arrangement is tied to the city you started in.
The cost, compared honestly
Here is the clean arithmetic on the single most common one-way trip in Kenya: Nairobi to Mombasa, one week of vehicle access, drop-off in Mombasa.
- Weekly rental rate 35,000
- One-way fee 20,000
- Insurance 5,000
- Monthly subscription 45,000
- One-way fee 0
- Insurance & maintenance Included
Two things worth reading carefully in that comparison. First, the FlexMove subscription is KES 15,000 cheaper — for a longer period of access. Second, you are not paying a one-way fee at all. Third, you have the vehicle for a full month, not a week — which means the same subscription covers the trip back up the country, weekend excursions in Mombasa, or anything else you need during the month.
A rental car is bound to a depot. A subscription is bound to a network. Only one of them lets you leave the car where the trip ended.
Five use cases where one-way drop-off changes the plan
Nairobi → Kisumu → Mombasa. Drop off in Mombasa. No backtracking, no wasted days on the return drive. See the Kisumu road trip guide.
Visit clients in Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kisumu on one trip. Pick up in Nairobi, drop off in Kisumu at the end. No dead time.
Moving from Nairobi to Mombasa. Load your belongings, drive down, drop off. No separate removal van, no one-way penalty.
A wedding in Nakuru, a flight home from Nairobi. Drive down, drop off in Nakuru, fly back. No stranded vehicle to arrange.
Living outside Nairobi and flying out from JKIA. Drive up, park, drop the vehicle at a Nairobi FlexMove location, and fly.
Upcountry for a week or two with the family. Drive up, use the vehicle while you are there, drop off when you leave — no return trip.
Popular one-way routes — with real numbers
Five corridors account for most one-way FlexMove trips. Here they are, with distance, drive time, and the fuel cost at 2026 Nairobi pump prices for a compact car returning 12 km/L.
| Route | Distance | Drive time | Approx. fuel | One-way fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nairobi → Mombasa | 485 km | 7–8 hrs | ≈ KES 8,500 | KES 0 |
| Nairobi → Kisumu | 350 km | 5–7 hrs | ≈ KES 6,200 | KES 0 |
| Nairobi → Nakuru | 160 km | 2.5 hrs | ≈ KES 2,850 | KES 0 |
| Mombasa → Malindi | 120 km | 2 hrs | ≈ KES 2,100 | KES 0 |
| Kisumu → Eldoret | 150 km | 3 hrs | ≈ KES 2,700 | KES 0 |
The Mombasa corridor is by far the most popular one-way trip — a two-way drive nobody wants to do twice. The Kisumu corridor is the second, most often for family or business trips west. The others cover coastal and highland travel within a single day.
Planning your one-way trip — five checks
- Check your kilometre allowance. The Car Plan includes 1,000 km per month. A one-way Nairobi → Mombasa trip is 485 km — comfortably inside the allowance. A round trip on the same corridor is roughly 970 km, also inside. Multi-city trips spanning several cities may need a plan upgrade — see the fuel cost anatomy for the km maths.
- Confirm your destination is in the network. All 14 cities are supported. If your destination is not a FlexMove city, drop off at the nearest one and plan your final leg separately.
- Reserve your vehicle from your pickup city. You can reserve up to two hours in advance from the dashboard. For weekends and holidays, reserve earlier.
- Plan your fuel. Fuel is not included. For a Nairobi → Mombasa trip, budget roughly KES 8,500 each way at current Nairobi prices.
- Drive and drop off. Pick up, drive, drop off at the FlexMove location in your destination city. The fleet desk can confirm the exact drop-off address by WhatsApp in advance.
The most common misconception about one-way drop-off is that we lose money on it. We do not. The network self-balances. One subscriber drives Nairobi → Mombasa; a week later, another drives Mombasa → Nairobi. Our job is to keep enough inventory at the ends of the corridor to serve both directions.
What we ask of subscribers is simple: tell us in advance when the trip is a one-way. It is not a fee or a permission. It is how we plan the vehicle's next assignment — which is what keeps the network efficient, and what keeps the drop-off fee at zero for everyone.
What about fuel?
Fuel is not included in the FlexMove subscription. You fill the tank as you go, at any petrol station you choose, and you keep the receipt trail if you need it for business expenses. For a Nairobi → Mombasa one-way trip, budget roughly KES 8,500 in fuel at 2026 Nairobi pump prices for a compact car returning 12 km/L. The same trip on a bike returning 40 km/L costs about KES 2,550.
That is a real cost, and we will not pretend otherwise. But put it next to the alternative: a traditional one-way rental carries the same fuel cost plus a KES 15,000–25,000 one-way fee plus a daily rate for the length of your trip plus whatever the rental company charges separately for insurance. See the full fuel cost anatomy for how the numbers stack.
Frequently asked questions
What is one-way car hire in Kenya?
One-way car hire means collecting a vehicle in one city and returning it in another. Traditional Kenyan rental companies either refuse one-way hires or charge a fee of KES 10,000–30,000 to cover the cost of returning the vehicle to its origin. FlexMove subscriptions include multi-city drop-off across all 14 network cities at no additional fee.
How much does one-way car hire cost in Kenya?
Traditional one-way rental fees in Kenya range from KES 10,000 to KES 30,000, depending on distance and operator. On the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor, the fee is commonly KES 15,000–25,000. On a FlexMove subscription, the one-way drop-off fee is KES 0 — it is included in the monthly subscription.
Which cities does FlexMove support for one-way drop-off?
FlexMove operates across 14 Kenyan cities: Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Malindi, Eldoret, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kericho, Nakuru, Kitale, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, and Kisii. Any of these can be a pickup point or a drop-off point — the network is fully interchangeable.
Can I plan a multi-city road trip on a single subscription?
Yes. Subscribers regularly plan multi-city trips such as Nairobi → Kisumu → Mombasa, dropping off the vehicle at the final city with no return trip required. The only constraint is the monthly kilometre allowance on your plan — 1,000 km on the Car Plan, which comfortably covers a one-way Nairobi–Mombasa or Nairobi–Kisumu trip, and requires a plan upgrade for longer multi-leg journeys.
Is fuel included in a FlexMove subscription?
No. Fuel is not included — you fill the tank as you drive, at any petrol station you choose. For a Nairobi–Mombasa trip, budget roughly KES 8,500 each way at 2026 Nairobi pump prices. That is still far cheaper than the one-way fee a traditional rental company would charge on top of its daily rate.
Can I use one-way drop-off for relocation between cities?
Yes. Relocation is one of the strongest use cases for one-way hire. Drive your belongings to the new city, drop the vehicle at the FlexMove location there, and you are done — no return trip, no one-way fee, and no need to hire a separate removal van.
